The American University of Science participated in QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2022 in Jakarta, Indonesia, from November 8 to 10, 2022, joining higher education leaders and institutional representatives to discuss emerging priorities in regional and global higher education.

The summit provided AUS with a platform to present its educational values and contribute to broader conversations on access, flexibility, and academic mobility. For AUS, the event reflected an institutional commitment to models of learning that can serve students beyond the traditional residential university pathway, including mature learners, working professionals, and internationally mobile students.

QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2022 brought together higher education leaders and institutional representatives from across the region.

As part of the summit program, AUS participated in a discussion on “Competency-Based Learning: a Perfect Educational Experience for Mature Learners.” The session examined how competency-based education can support students whose academic progress depends not only on classroom time, but also on demonstrated knowledge, professional experience, applied skills, and flexible pathways to completion.

Competency-based learning is especially relevant for adult and working learners because it recognizes that students often enter higher education with different levels of preparation, professional experience, and time availability. Rather than treating learning as a fixed schedule alone, the model emphasizes the achievement of clearly defined outcomes and gives students greater flexibility in how they advance through a program.

The AUS discussion connected this educational model to the university’s broader interest in accessible, practice-oriented higher education. By focusing on competency, flexibility, and measurable learning, AUS presented a model designed to support learners who must balance academic study with professional, family, and community responsibilities.

The event strengthened AUS’s public presence in regional higher education while reinforcing its commitment to flexible academic pathways, global engagement, and learner-centered educational design.

AUS will continue developing educational approaches that connect academic quality with accessibility, professional relevance, and meaningful learning outcomes for students across different stages of life and work.
