PREFACE

Nescire est initium sapientiae — To not know is the beginning of wisdom

Welcome to The American University of Science, hereinafter referred to as AUS or the University—a consecrated institution not merely established by charter, but ordained by purpose: to seek truth at the convergence of empirical science and the transcendent moral vision of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Founded upon the sacred realization that wisdom begins where certainty ends, AUS embraces its institutional axiom—Nescire est initium sapientiae—as both epistemological principle and spiritual commandment.

In an age of technological acceleration, moral entropy, and epistemic exhaustion, the University offers not a reflection of modernity, but a transfiguration of it—a luminous alternative. Here, education is not transactional, but transcendent; not commodified, but consecrated. It is rooted in truth, refined by faith, and ordered toward the eternal good. Within these sacred walls, intellectual rigor is inseparable from the formation of conscience; scholarship is not a mere profession, but a sacrament of vocation; and leadership is measured not by ambition, but by moral stewardship beneath the sovereign gaze of Divine Providence.

The AUS Wise Book, named in homage to sapientia—the divine gift of wisdom—is not an institutional manual, but a living codex of first principles. It articulates the covenant that binds knowledge to virtue, freedom to responsibility, and inquiry to sacred obligation. It is the moral architecture of an institution commissioned not only to educate, but to sanctify the intellect in service of the true, the good, and the beautiful.

Through a curriculum that harmonizes empirical precision with metaphysical contemplation, and through research that confronts the exigencies of our era with both audacity and reverence, the University forms principled leaders—scientists, scholars, and statesmen—equipped not merely to master complexity, but to discern eternal meaning within it. At the University, no truth is final unless it withstands the scrutiny of both reason and revelation.

All who enter this consecrated fellowship—students, faculty, researchers, and stewards—are bound by a singular vocation: to uphold, embody, and advance the ideals contained herein. In so doing, they affirm the University as a sovereign vessel of knowledge and virtue: an institution where faith refines reason, humility precedes understanding, and wisdom commands action—not for the fleeting ambitions of the age, but for the greater glory of God and the enduring flourishing of the human family.

GOVERNANCE, GUARDIANSHIP, AND PERPETUAL ALIGNMENT

The governance of AUS, entrusted to its Board of Governors, constitutes a sacred guardianship of the University’s mission, vision, and institutional integrity. This stewardship transcends administrative obligation; it is a solemn vocation of moral leadership, doctrinal fidelity, and eternal accountability.

Each section of this codified text—whether doctrinal, academic, ethical, or structural—is subject to continuous review and conscientious reaffirmation. This process ensures that the living identity of AUS remains harmonized with its divine mandate and responsive to the evolving exigencies of global higher education. The Board conducts annual reviews of all foundational texts, policies, and institutional declarations, ensuring their alignment with the transcendent principles upon which the University was founded.

As of this publication, the schedule of reviews and ratifications is as follows:

  • First Review: August 3, 2021

  • First Publication: September 3, 2021

  • Second Review: August 3, 2022

  • Second Ratification: September 3, 2022

  • Third Review: August 3, 2023

  • Third Ratification: September 3, 2023

  • Fourth Review: August 3, 2024

  • Fourth Ratification: September 3, 2024

  • Fifth Review: August 3, 2025

  • Fifth Ratification: September 3, 2025

  • (and perpetually henceforth, on an annual basis)

This living governance process does not merely preserve institutional integrity; it embodies the University’s irrevocable vow to uphold the highest standards of transparency, moral clarity, doctrinal fidelity, and visionary continuity. It affirms that AUS is not merely an academic institution, but a consecrated covenant—binding wisdom to governance, mission to accountability, and leadership to eternal truth.
